WHAT IS IT?

The Misa Tango is by Martin Palmeri, a living Argentinian composer. It is a piece that incorporates the typical rhythm of the Argentinian tango, yet is also entirely appropriate for a traditional mass. In fact, it contains all the fixed parts found in the Catholic tradition (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei).

The Mass was composed between September 1995 and April 1996 and was first presented in Argentina by the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, with the choir of the University of Buenos Aires and the Municipal Polyphonic Choir de Vicente López, to whom it was dedicated.

The Mass includes the presence of a choir, the voice of a soprano soloist, and the accompaniment of a piano, a bandoneon, and a string orchestra. The Ludus Vocalis choir has brought this original composition to Italy with great success. Indeed, it is a very powerful and impressive concert.

The Te Deum, by German composer Peter Reulein, provides the same organic composition and duration, making it the perfect partner for the Misa in concert. The Te Deum is also based on South American rhythms; in fact we can identify a tango, a habanera, and a huapango, which (as is also the case with the Misa Tango) is all written with an elegant and sober counterpoint, making it all the more suitable for performance in a holy space.

The Te Deum was performed in Italy for the first time by the Ludus Vocalis group of Ravenna. The Ludus Vocalis Choir directed by Stefano Sintoni will also be joined by the bandoneonist Massimiliano Pitocco (accordion teacher at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and an internationally renowned concert artist), the pianists Cristina Bilotti and Beatrice Santini, and the soprano Emilia Ferrari.

The Director: STEFANO SINTONI

Born in Ravenna, he studied piano at the Musical Institute “G. Verdi” in his home town under the guidance of M. Norberto Capelli, graduating in 1985.

During that same period he also studied the organ with Mons. Luigi Bartolucci and then with M. Liliana Medici Turrini, graduating in 1991 at the “G. Frescobaldi” Conservatory of Ferrara. While in Ferrara he also studied composition with Maestro Roberto Becheri, graduating in 1998.

ARTISTIC DIRECTION

Since 2014, “Messa in Musica” has been the Cultural Association in charge of returning the musical arts in Masses to their original role: a religious purpose. In 2019 it presented the sixth edition of its flagship project: “Avvento in Musica”, Sunday events marking the approach of Christmas, held in the Basilica of Santi Bartolomeo e Gaetano (Strada Maggiore 4).

The Association was born to fill a cultural void: Bologna, the Unesco City of Music with more than 300 musical events, can now also provide audiences with a repertoire of sacred music, allowing us to enjoy masterpieces within the holy places of the city.

The goal is to strengthen a tradition deeply rooted in Christian/Western culture. Since 2014, “Avvento in Musica” has produced twenty-three titles of sacred music, from the most famous masterpieces (Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini; Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina; Coronation Mass by Mozart) to the lesser-known (Misa Criolla) by contemporary composers. The Association has extended its activities by participating in initiatives promoted by the Culture Sector of the Municipality of Bologna. Public support for these initiatives further confirms how much the Association has been appreciated since its creation.
